A psychological testing (also known as an evaluation or assessment) provides information about how you or your child is doing compared to others. Strengths and weaknesses in the areas of intellectual ability, academic achievement, and emotional functioning are measured by comparing you or your child’s results against others who have taken the same tests — and this can often be as specific as comparing your results to others of the same age and intellectual ability. An individual First Meeting is the first step for an evaluation. Please contact us if you have additional questions about the type of evaluation you are seeking.
Types of evaluations
Columbus Circle Psychology offers a range of options for psychological testing in NYC — and now in Westchester, too. We can tailor the evaluation to meet your needs. Contact us for a complimentary phone call to discuss your needs.
Psychoeducational evaluation
This type of testing is often requested when your child is having trouble in a school setting. A standard administration includes an assessment of intellectual functioning (using for example the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Fifth Edition, or WISC-V), academic functioning (using for example the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Third Edition), and an emotional functioning section. When warranted by the diagnostic question, neuropsychological tests can be included in this assessment as well. New Service: Home testing is now available.
Psychological evaluation
This type of testing may be requested when there are concerns about emotional functioning or a possible psychiatric diagnosis. In this case, an assessment of emotional functioning is primary, and an assessment of academic functioning may not be needed. Emotional functioning assessment generally includes both objective (for example, Behavior Assessment System for Children) and projective measures (for example, the Rorschach and the Thematic Apperception Test). This evaluation can also be used to differentiate between psychiatric diagnoses.
Adoption evaluation
Adoptions often require an adoption evaluation by a clinical psychologist in order to assess your ability to parent effectively and to screen for psychiatric illness. Dr. Daley offers adoption evaluations, including the often-required MMPI-2 assessment. With your consent, Dr. Daley is able to work with the adoption agency to ensure that the format of the assessment meets the specific requirements of the the adoptive child’s country of origin.
Psychological Assessment Addendum
If you already have a recent (within the last year) evaluation, you may need an addendum to meet the needs of your current situation. For example, a school placement may require an assessment of emotional functioning that includes projective testing. Please note that cognitive tests such as the WISC-V should not be repeated within one year of a prior assessment.
